If there’s one thing on our wish-list for 2023, it’s a HOLIDAY. We don’t know where yet bit I’m aiming for somewhere warm, end of. Somewhere that us Brits love to head to and with millions of visitors annually, the Canary Islands are one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Each of the main islands offers something unique and knowing what to expect can make your holiday an unforgettable experience. If you’re heading there yourself, here are some tips for making the most of your visit to the Canary Islands.

How to travel to the Canary Islands

There are several options available when it comes to travel. Each island has at least one airport, with the biggest being Tenerife North and Gran Canaria. You can also travel using a cruise ship, such as P&O Cruises. These cruises take you around all seven of the islands, making it a great option for those who want to see everything the Canaries have to offer.

Which islands should you visit?

Each island offers something different – Tenerife is the biggest of the islands, the south is a tourist hotspot while the north features several picturesque villages. Fuerteventura boasts some of the finest beaches, while Gran Canaria boasts diverse landscapes. When visiting the Canaries, you’ll always find something to do. 

Visit the national parks

The Canary Islands is home to four national parks, and each one provides a different experience. The largest is Teide National Park in Tenerife, Timanfaya is made up entirely of volcanic soil, Orotava Valley is home to some famous vineyards and in Garajonay features one of the largest laurel forests in the world.

Food and drink

No visit to the Canary Islands is complete without sampling the wonderful food and drink grown on the islands. The volcanic soil of the Canaries gives the food a rich flavour, while several world-famous vineyards provide distinctive wines.

 Where to stay

Each island features countless resorts and hotels, and transport links are excellent on all the islands, so you’ll be able to get around easily wherever you stay. Of course, when travelling via a cruise ship you’ll have all-inclusive accommodation available to you.

As mentioned earlier, each island has excellent transport links. There are eight major airports, and you can easily book a hired car or get the bus from there.

Visit El Hierro

El Hierro is the smallest of the Canaries. While the larger islands are filled with resorts and nightlife, El Hierro is a great option if you want a quieter holiday. The island is home to charming local villages with great food and drink and beautiful natural wonders. If you want an authentic Canaries experience, visit El Hierro.

The best beaches

Each island is home to beautiful man-made and natural beaches. The largest beaches in the Canaries include Corralejo Grandes Playas (Fuerteventura), Las Teresitas Beach (Tenerife) and El Cotillo (Fuerteventura). And at nighttime, why not try a spot of Tenerife stargazing?

When is the best time to visit? 

The Canaries have warm weather all year round, so they’re perfect to visit at any time of year. The main resorts are always lively but tend to be busiest between July and August, so for a quieter visit the off-season might be best.

Go hiking in La Gomera

The Valle Gran Rey region of La Gomera features 67 hiking trails, making it a great place for those wanting to enjoy the natural beauty of the Canaries.
