Why Do I Suddenly Have Moths In My Home?

Many people absolutely hate moths, and for good reason. Not only can they be a general nuisance, but they can also destroy a number of expensive items in your home, from your carpets to your favourite woollen clothing.

As a result, it’s perfectly reasonable to be shocked at the sudden appearance of moths in your home. Below, we go through some of the main reasons why you may have months in your living spaces, before taking a look at some common mitigation tactics.

The season has changed

Moths, like most living creatures, look for protection when the weather turns a certain way. If the season has recently changed and it’s gotten a lot colder or wetter, then there’s a good chance that the moths that have appeared in your home are just trying to escape those elements.

Likewise, with the onset of summer, more moths will be hatching, meaning that there will be more of them about. On particularly warm summer nights, you’ll likely find that they’re out in force, and if you leave your windows or doors open at sunset, you could end up with a property full of moths.

Attractive foods

Pantry moths, a specific kind of moth, can enter your home on a range of food items, such as in dried fruit or even flour. Once they’re in your home, they can hide in a startling number of places, and can then be incredibly difficult to get rid of. Keeping a clean home is a good place to start though, and it can be a good excuse to keep your space tidy.

A recent textile acquisition

One of the most damaging varieties of these annoying critters is clothing moths. These creatures can enter your home on a range of textiles – often on second-hand woollen items such as jumpers or old carpets.

There are a few things you can do to try to prevent this from happening. One is to simply not buy second-hand wool or silk goods, but this isn’t always possible. If you find a second-hand bargain you simply must have, you can try washing those items thoroughly the second you bring them into your home, taking them straight from the bag and putting them in the washing machine.

How to get rid of moths

How you go about getting rid of moths will depend to a certain degree on the kind of moth you’re dealing with. Once you’ve identified that, you can start looking at moth solutions like the products sold by Moth Prevention

In some cases, such as when you have a truly terrible carpet infestation, you may need to take more drastic measures. These could include getting new carpets that are made from a non-natural fibre, or getting rid of other items in your home that moths are thriving on and laying their eggs.

Moths are a massive pain, and they can get into your home in a number of different ways. There are a few things you can do to get rid of them, however, and it’s important that you do your research to pick the right strategy.
