One of the first projects I tackled when we moved into the house was trying to improve our dark and depressing little kitchen – you can read how I got on with that here.
A year on, some of the walls and door have had a repainting owing to a lot of scratching when Maddie was little and the gas hob we bought to replace the ceramic one is still all packaged up in the garage.
I thought we were done with the kitchen for now but on a bit of a whim we’ve decided to replace the floor and the new one is being fitted today! The existing floor is covered in vinyl tiles which are very worn and pretty dirty – no amount of washing brings the floor up clean. Also, because they’re a dark reddy-brown colour, despite the fact we’ve painted the walls white the kitchen can still feel quite dark and small.
Our original plan had been to fit some large tiles on the floor but as our very lovely and honest floor fitting company advised, this will require a lot of upheaval and expense for something that will only ever be temporary.
Instead we’ve opted for a vinyl which will be laid in one piece. It’s by no means what I would choose if we were intending this to be forever, but given that at some point in the future the whole floor will be dug up anyway and the kitchen turned into a utility room, it will hopefully be a super solution albeit on a temporary scale.
I’m looking forward to seeing the difference a lighter floor makes to our kitchen and finally being able to feel like I can clean properly! Look out for the next blog post with our ‘after’ pictures…

Putting down temporary lino sounds like a sensible alternative. I love making over the house but my budget doesn’t match my expectations!
If only that lottery win would come in Louisa! I’d move out for 6 months and get everything done in one go *sighs wistfully*
