Smoothie Love: Broccoli, Apple and Kiwi

Do you ever wish you were one of those people that said “Yummy! Kale! I love this so much more than chocolate/cake/crisps/chips/all of the above”. Perhaps you are and if so, lucky you! For me, eating enough fruit and vegetables is definitely a conscious effort rather than something I enjoy doing and whilst of course I know how important it is and how good they are for me, creme eggs are tastier ok?

My Mum bought me a Nutribullet for Christmas after worrying that I might never eat again following a gluten allergy diagnosis in September but being the massive kitchen gadget cynic that I am, I couldn’t help but be dubious about whether it would bring any purpose into my life. Plus, our kitchen is miniscule, like really mini. Just about big enough if you were a family of dollies but we have no work surface space at all so adding another “thing” into the mix took some squishing.

I’ve tried some recipes from the Nutribullet book and also a couple that I’ve come across in other blogs with mixed success. Of course the ones packed full of fruit are yummy but if you wouldn’t eat 10 pieces of fruit in a day (and shouldn’t, good sugar or not it’s still far too much sugar) then churning them into a drink is no different and so I’ve been actively looking for ones which are more evenly vegetable-based.

Instagram is brilliant for healthy recipes and I came across ‘Blend It Like Rob’ who shares quick and easy recipes with exactly how much water/liquid you need to add too. So on my recent day off I gave a broccoli, apple and kiwi mix a go:

100g raw broccoli

1 green apple

2 kiwis, unpeeled

Fill with water to max line

And I liked it. I wouldn’t say it was love in the way that some of the others have been (and some have been very definitely “I wouldn’t clean my drains with this sh*t) but if I kept on it and got used to the taste it would be very enjoyable – the raw broccoli is a little overwhelming so I would experiment with slightly less and adding more water or perhaps switching out the apple for pineapple. I need to feel braver and try coming up with my own brews but next up is Apple and Rhubarb Crumble – well there has to be something naughty to make up for the something healthy…
