How To Start Running

It’s a new year, and you know what that means – resolutions. A lot of the time, the pressure to make resolutions means we don’t really think about them properly, and we just pick something random because we think we should. That’s not going to be very helpful in most cases; if we’re not invested in making a change, it’s not going to happen. 

That’s why, if you do want to make some changes, it’s best to think about them long and hard and come up with a real plan, rather than just announcing to yourself (and potentially others) that you’re going to do this thing or that one starting on January 1st. 

One idea that can be truly transformative is taking up running, but again, this isn’t something that can just happen – you need to plan for it and make sure you’re ready. So, if you want to get fit and healthy this year, here are some tips to help you start running and really make a difference.

Start Slowly

As with most forms of exercise, especially if you’re new to it, running should be something you start slowly and build up over time. That means slowly in the literal sense of not running too fast (if you do that before you’re ready, you might hurt yourself or find you don’t enjoy running and give up before you do yourself any good), but also in how far you run. 

Pick short routes to begin with and gradually increase the distance you’re running. As your body gets used to the new routine, you’ll be able to go farther and farther, giving you a great sense of accomplishment as well as some wonderful health benefits.

Get The Right Clothes

When you run, you need to be able to really move in the right way, otherwise you’re going to cause yourself an injury or not get the benefit out of running that you’re looking for because you’re too restricted and uncomfortable. Equally, you need to make sure your body can not only move well, but breathe too. In the end, wearing the right clothes will help with all of this and much more. 
Running requires a good pair of running shoes, at the very least, so start there and don’t be afraid to spend a decent amount of money. Your shoes are going to protect not just your feet, but your ankles, knees, hips, and even back, so it’s important to pick a good pair. You’ll also need running clothes made of breathable fabric that keeps moisture away from your skin.

Speak To Your Doctor

Before you start any new kind of exercise, it’s a good idea to speak to your doctor first. They will generally have some useful hints and tips about how to stay safe and healthy, and they’ll also be able to ensure you’re making the right choice when it comes to your overall health. It could be that a health condition you have means running isn’t a good idea, and they’ll suggest something else.
