Many of us have used technology to connect with others in recent years. From social media to Zoom calls, we’ve spent a lot of time communicating with friends and family online – and digital events seem to be here to stay!
If you want to catch up with some of your favourite people while having fun, a virtual games night could be perfect. For some inspiration for your gathering, read on.
Why have a digital event?
Games in general are rising in popularity. Even board games have made a comeback, with many people enjoying meeting up in person for games of Cluedo and chess.
But virtual games are also a great opportunity to socialise with friends. If you’re spread across the map and unable to meet in the same location, logging on and dialling in can be the perfect compromise, bringing you all together.
As well as giving you the opportunity to catch up, having a games themed video call makes everything fun.
Plan it
As with an in-person event, you’ll need to plan out when you’ll have your virtual games night and establish who can make it. You could always send a quick poll with a few options so that you can work out the date and time that works best for everyone- this can be especially important if you’re in different time zones.
If you’re unsure of the games you want to play, you can also put your ideas to everyone in the WhatsApp chat so that you have a few lined up for the evening.
Choose the video conferencing platform you want to host on too. Zoom is a go-to for many, but there are lots of options that could work well.
Choose the games
You know your friendship group, so it’s likely you’ll be able to tell if a quiz or something lively like a karaoke competition will go down well. It’s worth asking your friends to pitch in with ideas to get the ball rolling.
Remember to consider how easily accessible the games are for everyone. For example, something like online roulette could work well as there are dedicated platforms for this. Also, the games you play will depend on how many of you are attending.
Preparing for the evening
You’ll need to make sure you and your friends have a good internet connection and that everyone’s microphones are working well. It’s worth sending the event invite early so they can check they can access the platform you’re playing on.
You can even make it fun by creating a themed background, suggesting fancy dress and including a snack menu so everyone will have their crisps and dips at the ready.
Enjoy your night!
Explain the rules of each game, plan for breaks, and add in some prizes to make it a competition. Remember to have fun though! This is your event but take the pressure off and relax.
